Good Grief, Charlie Brown!
Embankment Galleries, Somerset House, London
25 October 2018 – 3 March 2019
The exhibition brought together original Peanuts comic strips by Charles M. Schulz with existing and commissioned work from a wide range of contemporary practitioners who have been inspired by the cartoon.
Peanuts ran from 1950 to 2000 with a total of 17,897 strips. At its height, it was read by 355 million people a day. It was, Schulz said, just “a plain old comic strip, which helps to sell newspapers”.
The exhibition, curated by Claire Catterall, explored the impact of the comic strip on the contemporary cultural landscape, uncovering the social, political and philosophical complexities told through the four-panel comic strip. Contributors included Fiona Banner, Mel Brimfield, Mira Calix, Steven Claydon, Marcus Coates, Ryan Gander, KAWS and David Musgrave.
