The National Archives Auditorium
Kew, London 2016-18
Transformation of generic deep plan workspace into a new auditorium within the existing concrete structure of a brutalist icon.
To provide new ways for the public to engage with the collection The National Archives requires new types of space. Previous studies had suggested a new auditorium would require a costly extension. By removing the suspended ceiling and 40 years of services we were able to create a new auditorium with a capacity of 150 on the first floor.
The auditorium creates a high quality acoustically tuned room for lectures, performance and film. The security and conditioning of the glazed enclosure ensures the space can host original documents from the repositories for public access. An adjacent learning room opens up to create an ‘L’ shaped conference space for 250.
The new auditorium was the second phase of our masterplan for the redevelopment of The National Archives at Kew. Its success has led to further stages being delivered.
